WPRFU News from Danny's desk 3 Nov 2017

The past week of rugby has been one of the most exciting we've had in a long time.
Coach Jerome Paarwaters' DHL WP Rugby u21 Currie Cup side, together with Coach John Dobson's senior DHL WP Currie Cup side, confirmed that we are still the best rugby province in South Africa by winning the coveted Currie Cup yet again.

Fans are invited to get their picture taken with the Currie Cup in the DHL Newlands foyer this Friday from 14:00 to 18:30, free of charge.

On top of these coveted victories in the professional divisions, False Bay Coach Jonno van der Walt and his boys also covered our bases in the amateur sector by winning the Gold Cup.

The summary of trophies back in the cabinet is then: the Super Rugby tournament conference trophy, the Currie Cup senior, the u21 Currie Cup, the Supersport Challenge trophy, the Gold Cup and the Women's National Club Rugby championships.

Additionally, Coach Bobby Joubert and his WP Rugby Sevens beat the England academy side 26-19 and took the Bronze Medal at the Assupol International Sevens.

Closer to home, our Score WP Club Rugby Sevens tournament continued to showcase the amazing Sevens talent we have in Western Province. Belhar and Brackenfell are the stand out teams so far, with a 100% success record in Pools A and B respectively, while Victorians and UWC are leading the way in Pool C and D.

This weekend will see the chasing pack look to squeeze into the top four log positions in each pool, which will make up the 16 teams to play in the knockouts on 11 November. We'll announce these fixtures closer to the time.

We will be finalising our two dream teams after the knockouts. These two teams, along with the winner of the Sevens Cup Final and two of our professional WP Rugby Sevens sides, will be up against each other and the Blitzboks on 18 November. I recommend everyone save the date now, as this is an entertainment opportunity not to be missed.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Score Sevens at Goodwood this Saturday, where fans can enjoy food stalls, beverages from the bar and the Bashews child safe kiddies zone. The first match kicks off at 12:00 and we play through to 5:30.

Best Regards
Danny Jones
