WPRFU News from Danny's desk

This past weekend saw the end of the WPRFU Score Club Rugby Sevens and by all accounts the day was a massive success.

The day saw our players from the Dream Teams, our WP Rugby sevens sides and tournament champions St Georges, play an entertaining set of round robin matches.

Our Dream Teams had of course not played together before, but after the first few games, the players started to find their rhythm. The matches showed mixed results for all the teams, such as St Georges beating the WP B side 15-12, and the WP B side then beating the WP A side 28 -17.

From a WPRFU perspective, we’re proud of the fact that we hosted seven weeks of exciting, well organised sevens rugby, and thus I must congratulate our WPRFU staff on the excellent work done over this period.

A big word of thanks goes to all involved in the tournament. Without our sponsors and suppliers, the event would not have been possible. Most notably, Score Energy drinks have embraced this event which saw 44 teams with more than a thousand players taking part. We’re quite sure that there is no other event of this magnitude that sees all the teams receive their own designer jerseys to play in. Additionally, I’d like to thank Cape Rugby TV for their partnership during the event. This ensured that fans all over the world got a taste of what WP Club Rugby has to offer.

Next week we host the Junior referees function at Newlands. This event is a rewards evening dedicated to our junior referees from the high schools, and will see amongst others, honours bestowed on our junior referee of the year and most promising junior referee of the year. The category of referee’s ambassador of the year is dedicated to the youngster that has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a referee. Additionally, we will give three regional awards for boys and girls from the Northern, Southern and Country regions. We expect a full house at the event, with former WP Rugby player, now referee, Egon Seconds as the guest speaker, as well as the President of the WPRFU, Mr Thelo Wakefield, in attendance to do the honours.

This weekend several of our referees and coaches will be attending our final Boksmart programme at Newlands. Most will be renewing their Boksmart Accreditation and some getting licensed for the first time. The Boksmart programme has proven to be one of South Africa’s top sport initiatives, dedicated to rugby safety.

Our AGM will be take place at Newlands this coming Monday, when we look forward to hosting our General Council.

Even though the formal part of our rugby calendar has come to an end, we know many clubs are still busy with their own functions and social events. We wish you all the best for these events and trust that you will share your stories, so that we may continue showcasing WP Club Rugby.
