WPRFU News Update 3rd March

The Cape Town Sports Council held their annual awards on Tuesday night and there were several representatives of the WPRFU that walked away with the night’s top prizes.
DHL WP and DHL Stormers player Juan de Jongh was named Sportsman of the Year, Leolin Zas was crowned Best Newcomer while the award for Technical Excellence went to WP referee Rasta Rasivenghe.

Additionally, the WPRFU was named Federation of the Year, an award they have won in previous years.

The 2017 WP Club Rugby fixtures have been completed and will be uploaded onto the ScrumIt system in the coming days.
This weekend there are more exciting friendlies on the go.

SLA Champions False Bay take on Tygerberg in a mouth-watering encounter at Florida Park, St Georges are up against NNK, Villager host Union-Milnerton, Bellville take on Young Stars, while Hamiltons host Wesbank.

Club coaches will now have a better idea of their sides’ strengths and weaknesses and will have spent more time bedding in the new faces. With the quality of rugby already on show even in these early stages, the 2017 WP Club Rugby season is set to be another enthralling one.

The launch of the Coaches High Performance Programme for club coaches took place on Wednesday at DHL Newlands. WP Rugby President, Mr Thelo Wakefield congratulated the participants on their selection and wished them well for the duration of the programme.

The participants include Thembani Ngubelanga (Blue Jets), Jonghi Nokwe (Busy Bees), Ricky Petersen (Tygerberg), Ishma-Eel Dollie (Union Milnerton), Wilbur Kraak (NNK), Ashieq Wise (Primrose), Warren Wilters (Macassar), Johno Van Der Walt (False Bay), Norman Jordaan (Stellenbosch), Gavin Passens (Hamlets), Ivan Solomons (CPUT Gardens), Mpho Mbiyoso (UCT), Johannes Conradie (UWC), Lionel Langenhoven (UWC), Edmund Coenraad (Kasselsvlei High), Adrian Jacobs (Union Milnerton), Clinton Van Rensburg (Rondebosch High).

In Coaching news, there will be a Level 1 course taking place today at  DHL Newlands from 13h30 – 20h00. All prospective coaches are greatly encouraged to participate in these courses. The next course will take place on the 10th March from 13h30 – 20h00 at DHL Newlands.

The WP Referees Society will be holding a World Rugby Boksmart course on 11th March at Brackenfell Primary School from 08h00 – 12h00. Anyone looking to take up refereeing are greatly encouraged to take part in these courses. For more information contact

The DHL Stormers will look to build on their 37 – 24 win over the Bulls last weekend when they take on the Jaguares at DHL Newlands on Saturday 4th March at 19h30. Best of luck to Coach Robbie Fleck and the team!
