WPRFU News Update 28th June

28/06/2017
Last night marked a very special occasion in the lives of our young provincial players. The WPRFU hosted the annual capping ceremony at the Cape Sun Hotel for our youth teams taking part in the SARU National Youth Weeks in just under a fortnight’s time.

Last night the U13 Craven Week, U16 Grant Khomo, U18 Academy and U18 Craven Week received their caps from WPRFU President Mr Thelo Wakefield in a glittering ceremony that has become a highlight of the WP Rugby calendar.

Tonight will be the turn of the U16 Boys XV team, U18 Girls and U18 LSEN teams.

Western Province HUBS was in Stellenbosch last Saturday for Youth Day as they ran an awareness program on wheelchair rugby.
There is no rest for the WP Referees society! Following numerous Level 1 and Boksmart courses for new and existing referees, the focus has now shifted to the schools.

An Assistant Referees course was held on Monday at Strand High while there will be a Junior Referees course for scholars aged 14 years and older which will take place on 18 and 19 July at Jan Kriel School.

The WP Women’s team took on SWD in an friendly match last Saturday in Heidelberg. The SWD team proved no match for our women who ran out 68 – 7 winners to cap a memorable few weeks. They had previously beaten a touring team from the UK and are determined to improve even further.

On Monday night the WPRFU held Regional Team trials for all Super League C clubs. A Regional Super League C team will be playing against the representative team from all the Regional Leagues shortly.

DHL Western Province were forced to work hard for a tense 46-41 victory against SWD Eagles in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge clash in Oudtshoorn on Sunday.

It was the eighth consecutive victory of the campaign for Coach John Dobson’s team as they ended the league phase of the competition unbeaten to set up a home quarterfinal at Green Point Track this Sunday.

The SuperSport Challenge Quarterfinals will be held at the famous Green Point Track on Sunday. The program will commence with the mouthwatering Super League A clash between SK Walmers and Belhar.

This match will be followed by the first Quarterfinal between the Blue Bulls and Sharks where after the DHL WP team will face the Free State Cheetahs in the late game. We call on all clubs to come out in their numbers to support the day.

The DHL Stormers are back in action this weekend as they travel to Bloemfontein to take on the Free State Cheetahs. It has been a long break for Robbie Fleck’s men as they aim to book a place in the knockout phase of the tournament. The game kicks off at 15h05 on Saturday 1st July.
