WPRFU News Update 24th February

24/02/2017
There are several exciting WP Club Rugby friendlies taking place this weekend.

Helderberg take on Kuilsriver at the Charles Morkel Stadium, Scottsdene and Bellville lock horns, Young Peoples take on Mamre in Paarl while there is a Helderberg derby between All Saints and St Georges.

The much-anticipated 7’s tournament hosted by Tygerberg at Florida Park took place last Friday night.
Hosts Tygerberg competed against stellar names such as Maties, UCT, UWC, Hamiltons, as well the WP Rugby Academy.

There was also a representative team from Germany taking part which added another dimension to the tournament. A dream team from the Wesbank 7’s also competed in the tournament.

Ultimately it was the 7’s team from Germany who took the title beating Hamiltons in the final.

The hype around this tournament gathered steam over the past few weeks and brought even more focus to the club and to the rugby community of Ravensmead.

In Coaching news, there will be a Level 1 course taking place at DHL Newlands on 3rd March from 13h30 – 20h00. All prospective coaches are greatly encouraged to participate in these courses.

The WP Referees Society will be hosting a World Rugby Level 1 course on the 25th of February at Brackenfell Primary School. Anyone looking to take up refereeing are greatly encouraged to take part in these courses. For more information contact dudu@wprugby.co.za

The WPRFU Women’s Rugby department had been hard at work these past couple of weeks with recruitment drives in several communities where they have met with local schools in the areas.

The department has been out in Khayalitsha, Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Nyanga and Gugulethu as they aim to grow the women’s game at grassroots level.

The department, in conjunction with the SARU Youth Training Centre, targeted these communities as key catchment areas within Western Province.

Head of Women’s Rugby development Samuel Mahlatsi and his department will next travel to Elsies River, Eersterivier, Strand and Kraaifontein as the recruitment drive gathers more steam.
