WPRFU News Update 21st April

The Easter break has come and gone and we trust that all our clubs, fans, players, and administrators had a well-deserved break spent with friends and families.
There was no club rugby action played over the weekend but there was an exciting Easter Tournament held at Blakes Rugby Club on Saturday 15th and Monday 17th April.

The tournament was sponsored by Score Energy Drink and run under the auspices of the WP Club Rugby department.

16 clubs from around the Western Cape participated in the 2 day event. Winners were crowned in the Bowl, Shield, Plate, and Cup finals with Allandale retaining their title of 2016 when they triumphed 42 – 40 over Scottsdene scoring the winning try in the dying seconds of the match to clinch the Cup Trophy.

It was great to see the stands full to the brim with club rugby supporters who enjoyed two days of excellent community rugby.

Elsewhere, the WP Women’s department are back at work this week with the 1st round of trials taking place for the U16 girls (Monday 24 April), and the U18 Girls (Wednesday 26 April). Both sets of trials will be held at City Park.

The 2nd round of trials for the girls will take place on 26 April together with the trials for the WP Senior Women’s on the same day at City Park. The second girl’s festival for u14, u16 and u18 teams will take place on Thursday 27 April at City Park.

The u16 and u18 1st round of High School trials will take place at Bellville High on Thursday 27 April 2017. The Primary Schools trials within the zones already commenced.

There will be a Level 1 Coaching Course taking place on Friday 21st April at DHL Newlands. For more information on how to apply for these courses please contact
Club Rugby fixtures are back underway this weekend and there are some standout games to look forward to.

In Super League A, Champions False Bay are at home for the first time this season as they take on UCT at Phillip Herbstein. Durbell host Tygerberg in another game not to be missed.

High-flying Villager take on St Georges in Super League B action while all eyes will be on Eikendal as Hands & Heart host  Collegians in what will surely be a high-scoring affair.

Young Stars host All Saints at the Green Point Track in Super League C, with Vineyards taking on Hamediehs in another exciting match-up.

The DHL WP Supersport Challenge Team will play away on Sunday in Port Elizabeth when they take on Eastern Province. On Saturday 29 April 2017 the team returns to City Park when they face Border. The exciting development is that 4 Regional Representative Teams will play curtain raisers prior to this fixture. The teams include Paarl, City, Southern and Northern Regions.

The DHL Stormers will hope to return to winning ways when they face the Crusaders in Christchurch tomorrow morning. We wish Head Coach Robbie Fleck and the team well!
