WPRFU News Update 15th June

The WPRFU has been a hive of activity over the past week with all our portfolios working around the clock to ensure the effective administration of their mandates.
The U16 and U18 WP teams will take part in the final trials at the Coastal Tournament in Outshoorn this weekend.

The Coastal tournament will see a round of trial matches take place that will determine the final squads for the National Week tournaments which take place in July.

The current youth squads have been training at the BestMed School of Excellence over the past few months and will face one last round of trials in Oudtshoorn before they find out whether or not they make the final team.

The Coastal Tournament takes place on Friday 16th (Youth Day), as well as Saturday 17th June.

The Senior women as well as the U16 and U18 squads have been training this week in preparation for the National Weeks. On Tuesday the WP U13 squad that will take part in the National tournament in July was announced.

In Referees news, the next World Rugby Level 1 course will take place on 24 June at UWC from 08h00 till 15h00. This will be followed by the Junior Referees course for scholars aged 14 year and older which will take place on 18 and 19 July at Jan Kriel School.

The Referees have been in the spotlight this week as the WPRFU has issued a clampdown on referee abuse during rugby matches. We want our referees to feel safe at all times and do not condone any abuse leveled towards them.

WPRFU President Thelo Wakefield said an Indaba will be held to address the issue. “After Eid (28th June), we will have a big indaba regarding foul play on the field and all the clubs have to come together to make suggestions,” he said.

DHL Western Province were forced to work hard for their 22-8 victory against Boland in a SuperSport Rugby Challenge Cape Derby in Strand on Saturday.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for DHL Western Province who remain unbeaten, although they were pushed all the way by their local rivals in slippery conditions at the Charles Morkel Stadium.

Round Nine of the WP Club Rugby season took place on Saturday, for all the latest results, logs, and fixtures, click here.
