WPRFU News Update 11th July

11/07/2017
Florida Park is the place to be this Sunday as two fantastic rugby matches will take place. Tygerberg take on Belhar at 13:00 in a curtain raiser to the SuperSport Rugby Challenge Final between DHL Western Province and the Tafel Lager Griquas that will kick off at 15h00.

The derby between Tygerberg and Belhar will carry extra significance with both teams in good form and pushing for a Top 6 place in Super League A. Florida Park will be packed to the rafters as these two traditional rivals lock horns.
The Western Province Rugby Football Union launched the junior talent identification programme at City Park on Tuesday 4th July.

As part of the efforts of the Bestmed School of Excellence, matches were held throughout the day at City Park in order to expose and develop talented young players in the U15 and U17 age-groups.

Following the provincial age-group trials and selection of DHL Western Province junior representative teams, smaller schools and clubs were asked to nominate players for the programme.

This programme will ensure that promising players who are not representing DHL Western Province at the upcoming national Youth Weeks are identified and developed.

The DHL WP U13 Craven Week and U16 Grant Khomo teams got off to the perfect start at their National tournaments as they recorded wins in their opening games.

The WP Girls’ under 18 girls returned as champions from their national week when they beat Border u18 by 15-13 in the final. The girls started like a house on fire when they defeated KZN 59-0 before beating Border Country Districts 38-7 to qualify for the final.

Well done to the coaches (Laurian Johannes (Head) and Brian Willemse (Assistant) together with their manager Nosipho Poswa.

The DHL WP Senior Women got off to the perfect start in their SARU Women’s Interprovincial tournament as they overcame a tightly fought first half against the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld. They led 14-8 before breaking away with five second half tries, while they conceded two tries in the match and a penalty goal, handing them a 41-13 victory.

Western Province Prop Babalwa Latshe and fullback Vuyolwethu Maqholo each scored twice in a memorable start to the season.

In Referees news, the WP Junior Referees returned from the Curro National 7’s tournament having learnt a great deal. We will be keeping a close eye on our young starlets who have come on in leaps and bounds under the tutelage of the WPRFU Referee’s Department.

There will be a Junior Referees course for scholars aged 14 years and older which will take place on 18 and 19 July at Jan Kriel School. Bookings are still open so do not miss this opportunity!
