WP Club Rugby News from Danny's Desk

As expected it was literally a festival of matches, as most clubs took advantage of the extra weekend days.
Busy Bees RFC hosted the annual Easter weekend tournament, at CPUT in Bellville, with 26 teams from all over South Africa taking part. The tournament saw plenty of fans support all three days not only at the CPUT venue, but also the post-match celebratory activities at the Langa RFC venue, fans and family included.

The matches showed some tough competition with Lagunya once again asserting their dominance amongst the forwards, but is was ultimately Boling Water beating Spring Roses 14-12 in the Trophy Final while Lagunya beat Crusaders 25-10 in the Plate Final. Blue Jets went down to Boiling Water in the Cup semi-final.

At the Saldanha Super 8 Easter Rugby Tournament Tygerberg beat Wesbank in Plate Final 20-19.

Other friendly results include Bella Vista 53-5 vs Whistling Wheels, Good Hopes 19-21 vs Morning Star, Hawston 19-50 SK Walmers and Porterville (43) Elsies (33).

This weekend St Georges travel to the Franschhoek RFC where the matches kick off with the u20’s at 12:00 and thereafter the 3rds, 2nd’s and 1st at the Franschhoek High School.

The DHL Stormers boys travel to Emirates Airline Park to take on the Emirates Lions on Saturday. Kick-off is at 17:15. We wish them the best of luck. I’m sure coach Robbie Fleck will be happy to know that some of the players have recovered from injury. Next week the DHL Stormers play the Sharks in Durban and are then back home against the Rebels on the 27 April. The kick-off time at DHL Newlands has been moved to 15:05. Tickets for this match will be available from, all Computicket outlets and the stadium box office from Monday, 23 April.

Remember to use the hashtags #WeStandTogether, #OnsStaanSaam, #SimeKunye in all your supporting social media posts.

More good news on our senior front is that twelve DHL Stormers players have been invited to attend the second Springbok alignment camp from 8 to 11 April.

On a final note I’d like to wish FNB UWC RFC the best of luck for this coming Monday’s FNB Varsity Shield match against FNB WSU RFC. We’re thrilled to have two WP Club Rugby teams in action as Stellenbosch RFC (FNB Maties) also prepare for their finals in the FNB Varsity Cup at the Danie Craven stadium on 16 April.

Best Regards
Danny Jones
