WP Club Rugby News

A lot of very wet rugby day for all clubs in Western Province, but we’re most grateful for the rain as it’s doing our fields the world of good.
Super League A saw a strong win for Stellenbosch at False Bay in very wet conditions, which saw a much slower game than usual. Maties went into the first half 11-9 and managed to The Bay off the scoreboard in the second half, with the end result in Maties favour, winning 19-9. Former WP Rugby player and assistant coach Drikus Hanke made the point after the game that possession and ball control was their major focus. Maties stay top of the log with Durbell, Hamiltons, UCT and Brackenfell close behind in the top five.

The Tygerberg and Union-Milnerton game is the toughest to call this weekend with both teams on six log points and both teams have one win from three games. Additionally the two teams are very close on season points, points against and average points per game. The fact that Tygerberg will be well rested after their bye this past weekend might play into their favour, but it’s a Union-Milnerton home game at Theo Marais, and this could just give them the advantage they will be looking for.

Collegians, Rangers, Primrose and Vineyards played their first games this weekend. Relegated team Primrose travelled to Paarl to play a very motivated Vineyards and scored a close 19-17 win. While at Lenteguer it was a typical derby match between Collegians and Rangers with a 10-3 win for “The Coll”. Kuilsrivier move to the top of the log in Super League B after their 18-6 win over Hands and Hearts and Coach Gerard Matroos “Ysters” will be happy knowing that after this weekend’s match against Young Peoples ‘The Kuila Boys’ will have three consecutive home games.

After beating Kraaifontein 25-19, Hamlets move up to second on the log. Hamlets will be happy with this win after their big loss to Franschhoek last week. Helderberg jump to third place after beating Bellville 10-6.

In Super League C it’s a top of the table clash between Goodwood and Maccasar. Goodwood now lead the log after beating Young Wesleys 17-7. Maccasar will still feeling strong after their last three weeks worth of home game wins, but this will be their first test away from home. You can watch the highlights of this game on Cape Rugby TV on Wednesday on DSTV ch 263 at 9pm on Cape Town TV.

In the Helderberg basin we see a derby match between Strand United and Strand. Strand have gained some momentum after winning their last two games and Strand United come off a big 65-0 win over Young Stars.

Caledonian Roses and Hamediahs had their first game in the City League this weekend, and as was expected it was a typical low scoring derby match. The spoils however went to “Callies”, 11-10. They will now have their work cut out for them as they take on log leaders Masiphumelele, who even after a bye this weekend remain top of the log. The biggest climber is Young Ideas who are now in second place after beating Perseverance 34-0.

Morning Star is certainly the shining light in the Southern League having won four from four. After their 19-12 win over Peninsula they jump to number one on the log followed by Retreat and Atlantis.
Atlantis is unbeaten so far and will be looking for a good result against Noordelikes. Noordelikes will however be no walkover as they come off a tough 20-18 win over second place Retreat.

The Northern League sees a big derby between log leaders VD Stel-Evergreens and Stellenbosch Coronations. This will be a tough match, not only because of the derby factor, but “VDS” come off a 43-17 win over Windmeul United, while “Stell Corr” had a solid 43 -19 win over Blakes.

The Paarl League is back in action after last weeks break. Apart from the Albions versus Lower Paarl match, most of the games this weekend are between teams with larger log point gaps. Bottom of the log Perel United will have a tough weekend as the square off with log leaders Young Standards.
