WP Club Rugby News

We are now one week closer to the start of the WP Club Rugby league with the official start on the 2nd of June. We’ve been blessed with an abundance of rain this week, which will see an improvement in the conditions of many of our fields.
Clubs are reminded to keep engaging with the facilities management and monitor the field condition scores so as to determine playability.
This past week we saw the completion of the initial set of university games in Super League A as the students begin their exams. After UCT’s win over Maties last week they now sit on top of the log in Super League A with Maties in second place. Unbelievably this is only the 4th away win between the two universities playing history. UWC will be looking to regather after losing 64-23 to Victorians on the weekend and will most likely be happy to have a short break. We wish all three universities the best of luck as they prepare for the annual USSA tournament starting on 30 June at Wits University in Johannesburg.
Looking at some of the friendlies results from the past weekend we see a number of teams have put their hands up and shown their intentions. Union Milnerton ( Super League A ) beat Hands and Hearts ( Super League B ) 68-5. NTK will be happy with their win results after this loss to Paarl last week, as they this week beat Helderberg 44-27. Super League A contenders Durbell beat Tygerberg 29-12, thereby also showing their intentions for 2018.

Several of our clubs have arranged for the final friendlies before the start of next weeks league matches. We expect a big derby as two of South Africa’s oldest clubs, Villagers and Hamiltons will be going head to head at Brookside this weekend. The two teams have been in separate leagues for some time now, but this year we see Villagers back in Super League A. Hamiltons have been successful in the league but Villagers will be looking to show that they deserve to be in Super League A.
Amongst others we see Super League B teams Kraaifontein and Helderberg going up against each other at the Charles Morkel Stadium. Kuilsriver travel to Whistling Wheels at South Stratford. In the Helderberg basin Sir Lowrians take on Raithby United and in the Paarl League Allandale and Perel United are up against each other.

The past few weeks saw the several of our schools compete in the WP Schools Rugby trials for selection to the WP Junior teams. We’ll be announcing these teams shortly. Paarl Boys’ High who will be turning 150 years old this year and will will host the Craven Week and Academy Week in 2018 from 08-14 July 2018. We’re happy to announce that this year WP Rugby will field an invitational side in addition to the regular Craven week side.
Girls rugby is growing from strength to strength judging by the huge interest shown by schools at the last festival held on 18 May 2018 at City Park. Thirty Two teams of which 20 were Under 16 teams participated in the festival playing 15 a side rugby and showcased a true enthusiasm for the game of girls rugby.
The WP Rugby girls elite squads also had their first run in preparation for the upcoming youth weeks in July 2018. Two under 16 and one under 18 team clashed with their Boland counterparts at Bellville High School this past Tuesday. Their final round of friendly matches will be against their SWD opponents at a venue still to be determined.
The Referee Department is still hard at work as they host another Boksmart Course this weekend at Brackenfell Primary School commencing at 08h00. The Department will also host a Junior Referees course on 26 and 27 June 2018 at Jan Kriel Primary School. All high school pupils interested to join may contact Ben Theron on
The Referees Department is also continuing with their drive to recruit more referees in the light of the reduced number of teams that will compete in the club rugby leagues this season. We require clubs to nominate interested parties to be trained as referees. Please contact Ben Theron for more information herein.
