WP Club Rugby News

The season officially begins on 2 June 2018. This week we held forum meetings with our various leagues and explained that 2018 is certainly an abnormal year. This means all clubs are expected to understand the various complications which could arise due to field conditions. We’ll have more details as our meetings with the City of Cape Town continues. In the meantime we ask clubs to be cognisant of the fact that water restrictions are still in effect, and there will be field selection disruptions during the season.

More information will be shared at the various Regional Meetings that will take place on this coming Monday and Tuesday at the venues below. The Club Rugby Department sent notices to all club of these meetings.

Several matters were discussed at this week’s forum meetings including projected fixtures and the 2018 competition format. This year the new format kicks off with all teams playing all other teams in their league, but league winners will only be determined in the knockout championship round after the first phase of the league is complete.

The Championship phase will see the top six in each league compete in a knockout format at central and neutral venues. We anticipate that with the potential for full game TV coverage and sponsor engagements this championship will be very exciting, and will offer enormous spectator value.

This past week saw our universities go up against each other as they scramble to get their initial matches in before that student holidays. On Saturday we saw UWC up against Ikey Tigers at The Green Mile. The match was closely contested in the first half, but the second half saw UCT clearly take advantage of the local conditions as they played with the wind in their favour. UCT took the win 33-16.

Tuesday saw our first midweek games at the Danie Craven Stadium with both local sides Maties and Victorians in familiar conditions with all players showing their eagerness to compete in the first team this year. Maties walked away with a 56-12 victory and took their place on top of the log.

This weekend we see a double header at the Danie Craven Stadium as UCT take on Victorians and UWC going up against Maties. This will be a truly varsity affair with all four of our Universities from WPRFU up against each other. Maties and Victorians off course have home ground advantage. The highlights and interviews from these matches can be watched on Cape Rugby TV, Wed 9pm on Cape Town TV, DStv 263.

In addition to our varsity fixtures we have a number of endorsed friendlies. One interesting fixture will be Durbell against False Bay. False Bay are off the current Gold Cup champions and will be looking to knock last year’s winners Maties off the top spot. They will be able to test their merit against former community cup contenders Durbell. Hammediehs travel to Franschoek while Villagers host Brackenfell. This match will also be interesting as Villagers are back in Super League A while Brackenfell has of late shown that they intend stamping their authority in Super League A.
