WP Club Rugby News

This past weekend saw a number of clubs come up with creative ways to get gamwe time.
Much like in the last couple of months, most of them travelled outside the Cape Town area, whilst observing the need to preserve our playing fields.

Union Milnerton RFC and Hillcrest RFC were privileged to play each other at the home of Boland Rugby, in Wellington on Friday evening. Exceeding most expectations and given that both clubs are finding it difficult to clock hours on the practice fields, this encounter was by no means a dull and dry one. Both teams ran at pace, spotting gaps with ease but each time were met an equally capable defensive effort. Coach Isma-eel Dollie will be happy with his 31-24 win. While stalwart Uni-Mil captain Eddie Theron said it was important for his boys to remain active and be prepared for the tough 2018 league season.

All Saints RFC and St Georges RFC travelled to the Grabouw to do battle in a Helderberg derby, at the Molteno Sports Grounds. This match was played at a very high pace, entertaining the hordes of faithful club rugby supporters in attendance. Great interplay and fast-paced offloads allowed for some exciting and entertaining rugby. Forwards and backs linking brilliantly as both teams displayed some amazing skill and talent. in the end, the Lulu Boys got the better of Saints, edging them 18-15.

Other match results: Saldanha 19-45 Durbell, Wesbank 21-43 NTK, Kylemore 21- 29 Newtons, Franschhoek 15-10 Delicious, SK Walmers 31-19 Kuils River, Morning Star 21-7 Goldstars (Grabouw) and Young Peoples 24-12 Young Gardens.
This weekend we have a few teams in action in preparation for the league:

Our University teams dominated both Varsity Rugby tournaments this year including Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield. Maties claimed an emphatic 40-7 victory over NWU-Pukke on Monday evening while UWC defended their Varsity Shield title, when they beat WSU last week. Both sides are the only unbeaten sides in both competitions and we are extremely proud of the hard work that coaches Hawies Fourie and Chester Williams are putting along with their amazing and brilliant coaching staff. This also means that three Western Province university teams will be competing in the premier intervarsity competition including Maties, Ikeys and UWC with CPUT doing us proud in Varsity Shield.

The DHL Stormers are away to the Sharks in Durban this weekend. This ground has often been a good luck venue for our boys and we’ll be watching with anticipation as we hope for a good result. We remain positive with our full support behind our boys as always.

This weekend the second SuperSport Rugby Challenge gets underway with all the teams in action. Defending champions and our very own Western Province boys will travel to the Eastern Cape to face the EP Elephants at the Wolfson Stadium in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth. Kick-off is at 15:00. The match will be broadcast live on SS8.

If you have not yet joined the Newlands Faithful, then now is your chance to do so and receive a fantastic hamper to the value of R3000. The hamper has loads of official DHL Stormers clothing apparel including the DHL Stormers replica jersey and cap, a membership card, bonus gifts, a R 500 Adidas Voucher and so much more. As always remember to use the hashtag #westandtogther in your various social media posts.
