WP Club Rugby News

Interesting results across the WP Club Rugby Leagues, and it’s clear that any team can win on any day.
In this week’s midweek match between we saw SK Walmers bounce back with a 26-41 point win over Victorians. It’s clear that playing at “The Track” is a tough ask for visiting teams. SK now have their next two matches at home against NTK followed by UWC. Coach Wilbur Kraak will know that winning these matches is absolutely critical to avoid the bottom three relegation zone.

St Georges and Belhar will be equally concerned as they occupy the bottom of the log in Super league A. St Georges will draw some comfort from the SK win as they prepare to face Vics at Gustrow, but thereafter they will face extreme challenges against False Bay, Stellenbosch and UCT with the final match against SK Walmers.

This weekend will see a massive clash between current log leaders Durbel and reigning champions Stellenbosch at the Danie Craven Stadium. These teams are sitting in position one and two respectively and with both teams pretty equal on match stats the pundits will find it hard to call.

Villagers seem to be holding their own in Super League A so far this season, but this Saturdays match will be a test of character as they face UCT away.

All fingers point towards Paarl and Daljosafat this weekend with matches between some of Super League B log leaders. It’s again a one and two match up as Franschhoek who remain top of log square off against Paarl. Currently these log positions are determined only by points difference. Vineyards will be looking for a win at the same venue as they face third place Kuilsrivier. Vineyards are still within striking range of the top three with their game in hand and will be motivated for a win to make to the knockouts.

Log positions in the bottom of Super League C are very close with five teams on ten points or less. Sir Lowrians are against home town rivals Strand United. With a number of these teams with games in hand, Sir Lowrians will know that every match is a must win match for the remainder of the season. Strand United however come off a 44-24 win over Mannenberg Rangers, and will be drawing confidence from this result.

In the City League Caledonian Roses host Silvertree. This match will be big, not only because of the log positions two and three, but also thanks to strong community ties.

As was anticipated Western Zebras took full advantage of their home ground when they faced up to log leaders Masiphumelele this past weekend. This 15-14 win has now moved them to position four on the log, and puts them in the hunt to make the top three. With another home game this weekend Zebras could climb up even further as they face Hamediahs who come off a 15-18 loss to Progress.

Morningstar continue to dominate in the Southern League as they beat Rocklands 44-25. They will be looking to increase this log margin as they face bottom of the log Young Brothers.

We seem to be playing musical chairs between VD Stel Evergreens, Raithby and Blue Stars United at the top of the log. This week VDS-E has moved back to the number one spot with Raithby and Blue Stars in two and three respectively, after Raithby’s 28-27 win over Blue Stars and VDS-E getting the full allocation of points against Imiqhayi. Unless we have a draw between Strand Pioneers and Blakes this weekend, we’ll see at least one of these teams score their first win of the season.

There are no matches in the Paarl League for the next fortnight, this is predominantly due to the local school derbies and several of the local coaches involved at these matches.

Women’s club rugby is back this week with Blue Jets hosting Tygerberg in Khayelitsha while log leaders Busy Bees travel to UWC to defend their top position. These matches will kick off at 14h30.
