SHARK BITE – TWO TIMES?

16/08/2012

A Rugby Column by Mr H

GOOD ADVICE
“To get bitten by a Shark is a traumatic experience.”
“To get bitten by a Shark twice in 2 weeks – in the same manner and at the same venue is catastrophic.”
This saying, that has been going around in rugby circles in the Western Cape, summarises the feelings amongst rugby supporters in the Western Province after the Currie Cup defeat last week-end against the Sharks.
To succeed in rugby you need to do the basics well on the field – that is the lesson for Province after their disappointing defeat against the Sharks.

THIS IS SHOWING COMMITMENT
The rain poured down on Newlands when the DHL dancers took the field just before kick-off. The commitment and passion of the dancers in the rain impressed a lot of people – and I think they were a good example for many club players who don’t pitch up for matches when there are still only clouds in the sky!

GREEN-AND-GOLD AT NEWLANDS
The Boks will be in action this week-end at Newlands against Argentinia, newcomers in the Castle Lager competition.  My best wishes to the WP players in the Bok  team: Bryan Habana, Jean de Villiers, Andries Bekker and Eben Etsebeth.   Jean is also captain of the team and we wish him a very successful test match as skipper of the men in Green-and-Gold

GOOD LUCK TO THE WP WOMEN’S TEAM
The WP Womens’ team will be in action on Saturday when they will play against SWD Eagles at Milnerton.  The match starts at 12:00.

A TIME TO PLAN
With the Boks in action this week-end there will be no club rugby matches.
The teams will use the time to plan for the weeks ahead.
Durbell will want to keep their winning streak, and end the season on a high note when they will represent the WP Union at the SA National Club Championship.  I trust that Durbies will peak at the right moment for this very important tournament.
Maties will also do their homework, as they are still in with a chance for league honours – but they must win everything and with maximum points.

A CLOSE RACE IN SUPER LEAGUE B
In Super League B, NNK caused an upset by beating the log leaders, Helderberg.  NNK is now ahead of Bellville in second spot on the log and it will be a very close race between them for one of the top-spots in their league.

WP U.21 MUST GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK
The WP u.21 team has lacked consistency this season, and they will need to get back in winning form if they want to get to the play-offs.  The current top-teams in this national competition are:

Sharks  4 4 17
Bulls 4 3 15
Cheetahs  4 3 14
WP 4 2 10

WP U.19 IN STRONG POSITION
The WP u.19 team has done well thus far and they trail the log leaders by only 1 point.  The log for the u.19 national competition:

Div A

Bulls 3 3 15
Leopards 5 3 15
WP 4 3 14
Lions 5 3 13
Sharks 4 2 11
OVS 4 1 7
SWD 4 0 0

Rugby greetings
Herman Abrahams
