GOOD DAY AT OFFICE FOR WP, AND A PROUD MOMENT FOR ME

GOOD DAY AT OFFICE FOR WP, AND A PROUD MOMENT FOR ME

23/08/2012

A RUGBY COLUMN BY MR H

A PROUD MOMENT
I was a very proud man on Saturday on Newlands when the SA Rugby Union presented me with a special award for services rendered to rugby in the Western Province as well as at national level. (Theuns Roodman, CEO of the WP Rugby Union was also honoured by the SA Rugby Union).

The award was presented to me by the President of SA Rugby, Oregan Hoskins and the CEO, Jurie Roux.
These awards came with the end of my career as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the WP Rugby Union, as well at that of Theuns term as CEO.
I will be leaving this position at the WP Union from the end of this month (but will still be involved with WP Rugby in the future, but in another capacity).
The President of the WP Union, Thelo Wakefield also bestowed the honour on me to hand out the colours to the WP Amateur Team. I am looking forward to join the WP Amateur Team next week in Oudtshoorn when they will be playing in the southern region tournament.

GOOD DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR WP
Last week-end was a good day at the office for rugby teams of the Western Province.  At Kimberley the Currie Cup Team fought back to beat a fiery team from Griquas.  To beat the Griquas on their home turf is always a great achievement and my congratulations to the team, coaches and management.
Both the WP u.19 team as well as the WP u.21 team achieved wins over the Cheetahs. A special word of congratulations to the fine effort of the WP u.21 team.  In total 18 players could not be considered for selection (due to injuries and players promoted to the senior side).  Well done – everyone!

NEWLANDS – ALWAYS A GREAT TEST VENUE
I was very proud to be a spectator last Saturday at Newlands where the Boks played against Argentine.  We had a great crowd with a vibrant spirit.  Newlands with all its history and character is a very special test venue.  Also my congratulations to the Bok team under the leadership of Jean de Villiers..

WELCOME BACK TO THE MOSLEM CLUBS
I want to use this opportunity to welcome the Moslem clubs back on the field after being out of action for a number of weeks.  I know it will be difficult to find your feet immediately after such a long lay-off, but I am sure you will get going and perform to the best of your abilities.

STRONG WP AMATEUR TEAM
The selectors  of the WP Amateur Team had a tough task, but at the end a strong team will be sent to Oudtshoorn for the Southern Region Tournament for Amateur Teams.
The following players were selected: Vivian Fredericks (Hands & Hearts), Elmo Thomas (Primrose), Albert Trytsman (Brackenfell), Danwill Erasmus (SK Walmers), Cheslyn Roberts (Belhar), Edgar van Wyk (Kuils River), Frederick Muller (UWC), Denzil Riddels (SK Walmers), Shameegh Allen (False Bay), JP Geldenhuys (SK Walmer), Ryan Olivier (False Bay), Juan-Paul Kellerman (UWC), Lukhanyo Nomzanga (Belhar), Oswin Mentoor (Bellville), Alconray Botha (Tygerberg), Jano van Zyl (Hamiltons), Waldo Prinsloo (Hamiltons), Shaun McDonald (Villager), Charlton van Jaarsveld (UWC), Christo van Wyk (Tygerberg), Arno Johnson (Bellville), Armien Bailey (Helderberg), Berthan Erasmus (NNK), Umraan Jawat (Helderberg), Warrick Rhoda (Primrose).
Lionel Langenhoven of Kuils River is the coach and Kevin Musikant (False Bay) the assistant-coach.  Gavin Sheldon is the team manager. Denzil Riddels is the captain and Albert Trytsman the vice-captain.

LAST MONTH FOR CLUB RUGBY
With about a month left, things are hotting up. The teams at the top of the logs, will want to sustain their good form and they don’t want to stumble over the last few hurdles in the month of September. In Super League A the log leaders Durbanville-Bellville will not be in action this week-end, but the team that are chasing them, Maties, will play at Florida Park against Tygerberg. It will be a big match at Constantia for both teams, False Bay and Villager.  They are both finding themselves in the relegation zone and both need a win desperately.  Exciting rugby will be seen in the match between Vics and the Ikeys, whilst Belhar will play against Hamiltons.  The team for Sea Point has shown good form the last few weeks.

SUPER LEAUGE B
The log leaders Helderberg will play in Goodwood against the home team, whilst Hands & Hearts will be at home against Bellville.  NNK will want to keep their winning momentum when they will travel to Kuils River to play against the home team.  Pniel/Villagers will play at home against Brackenfell and they will want to show that there are still enough fuel in the tank.
But the match of the week-end in Super League B will be between Primrose and Collegians.  Fireworks are expected in this clash.

PREMIER LEAGUE A
The big match is the one between UWC and St Georges. Elsies River will want to build on their momentum when they will play Langa, whilst Scottsdene will face Paarl.  An interesting match is expected between Rangers and Hamlets.

FIREWORKS IN PREMIER LEAGUE B
There will be fireworks at Sir Lowry’s Village on Saturday when the home team will tackle Macassar.  When Sir Lowrians and Macassar met earlier this season a humdinger was seen by a huge number of spectators and the same spectacle is expected on Saturday (…Rumours are flying around that the Sir Lowrians team will run onto the field full of energy – it is believed that some of the players have build up their levels of carbohydrates with a car-load of “fish and chips!”)
Another derby will be the one in Stellenbosch where Stellenbosch-Coronations will tackle Van der Stel.

TILL NEXT WEEK
Next week will by my last column in my capacity as Deputy Chief Excutive Officer of the WP Union.  In that column I will look back in history and also to the future.

Rugby Greetings
Herman Abrahams
