Clubs and youth players – a home or not? The key to growth or stagnation.
Clubs and youth players – a home or not? The key to growth or stagnation.
19/08/2010
A Rugby Column by Mr H
It is this time of the year when clubs will need to look at their committees. A lot of questions will be asked the next few weeks.
How successful was the season on and off the field?
If it was successful – why?
It it was unsuccesful – what were the reasons?
Are the right people in key positions – like coach, chairman and secretary – in the club?
Do clubs select the best people in positions or merely the most popular people?
All clubs aspire to play in the top-league, but only the top-10 will get rewarded. One common factor of all the top-teams are that they have u.20 teams in the league. To be a top-team you have to invest in youth rugby.
There are numerous benefits for clubs to invest in youth rugby. For example:
• it is a vehicle to get young players in the system of club rugby;
• clubs with u.20 teams are a natural home for matriculants, who lives in the community, once they leave school;
• it ensures “new blood” in the clubs.
The vast majority of clubs do not play with u.20 teams in the WP Club League. I want to appeal to the clubs to make the effort and get u.20 rugby up and running in their clubs. That is the way to become a top club.
The starting point is to get a relationship going with schools in your community.
The Vuka schools teams, that were recently selected, offer such an opportunity.
With this in view, herewith the information about the different Vuka teams and the contact persons.
Make an effort and contact the managers/coaches of teams in your community. Hopefully clubs will persuade a huge number of young players to join their clubs.
Vuka teams in sequence: region; team’s name; coach/manager; contact number:
* Delft/Blue Downs/Mfuleni – Cobras – Ralph Talmarkes – 083 7253652;
* Ravensmead/Elsiesrivier – Falcons – Cedric Cyster – 082 9496589;
* Mitchells Plain East - Stallions – H van der Rheede – 021 3938609;
* Mitchells Plain West – Gladiators – Gerine Fredericks 073 1136641;
* Southern Surburbs- Mustangs - Nazeema Williams – 078 1726441;

I WAS A PROUD OFFICIAL OF WP RUGBY.... On Saturday I was a very proud man. When last did all 3 teams (Currie Cup, u.21 and u.19) of Province thrashed the Bulls on one day?
With this 3 victories it is now 18 out of 18 for these 3 teams.
And the WP Amateur Team also made us proud with a convincing 30-20 win over the Boland Amateur Team.
For all the WP teams the tally is thus 18 out of 18! Well done to everyone – you make us all proud.
BLISTERING PACE AT FLORIDA PARK... I was a spectator on Friday Night when Tygerberg and Belhar clashed in their Super League B match. The pace was blistering and I want to congratulate both teams for providing such an entertaining match. It was a great advertisment for club rugby in the Western Province.
THE SPRINT TO THE FINAL....... In Super League A the Maties team are sprinting for top honours and they will be very difficult to stop. Their clash on Friday evening against Durbell will be a critical one for both teams.
In Super League B Belhar is too far ahead for the chasing pack and the same can be said to Brackenfell (Premier B), UWC (Division 1) and Busy Bees (Division 2).
On Friday at 17:00 clubs are invited to attend an important meeting about Lotto applications. Clubs will receive guide lines how to apply to the Lotto for financial support. Don’t miss this meeting, because it could change the future of your club!
I read on the chat forum of the WP Clubrugby Website that some people feel that WP Rugby should implement the club rugby system of KwaZulu-Natal (Sharks).
A question to those commentators – why are that union without any top clubrugby trophy - including the National Club Champs Trophy and the Varsity Cup Trophy?
Rugby greetings
