ARE THE SLEEPING GIANT AWAKENING?
In Division 2 Buy Bees (Langa) and Blue Jet (Khayelitsha) both have a good chance to be league winners this season.
In Division 3 Young Ideas (Langa) are on of the top teams, whilst in Division 4 Young Brothers (Gugulethu) are also in the running for league champions.
The WP Rugby Union is exited about the excellent performances of the abovementioned teams and this is a sign of good things to come in the future.
A major reason for the good performances of the clubs on the rugby field is the improved efforts from the club’s administrators.
The committees of the clubs have worked hard to ensure that their administration is at a high level (Langa is a very good example of that).
It just underlines the principle that good performances on the field goes hand in hand with solid administration.
ONE TO GO FOR MATIES…. The Maties only need 1 point from 3 matches to make sure that they win Super League A.
Once again the Stellenbosch team will be crowned as champions in the WP Union.
WP AMATEUR TEAM STILL UNBEATEN….The WP Amateur team are still unbeaten. Last week-end the WP team beat an EP Country XV by 52-26.
Congratulations to Andy Coetzee (scrum half of Villagers) who scored 3 of the 8 tries.
LOTTO MEETING…. The meeting last Friday about Lotto applications were very helpful for all the officials who attended the meeting.
Many clubs who attended the meeting were able to send in their completed applications by Monday.
Finances are always an issue at clubs. All clubs can do with extra money. That is why I can’t understand why clubs don’t try to obtain funding from the Lotto.
Don’t miss opportunities like this.
NAMES OF COMPETITION…… All official WP Teams only participate in tournaments under the jurisdiction of SA Rugby. The naming rights of those tournaments are the responsibility of SA Rugby.
WHY ONLY 2 PER CLUB?..... There are some people who are unhappy that only 2 players per club are selected for the WP Amateur Team.
At a joint meeting of the club coaches they have decided that a maximum of 2 players per club must be considered for selection for the WP Amateur Team.
The reason for this decision is because the WP Amateur Fixtures take place during the WP Club League Competition.
For example: it would be difficult for a club to field a strong team if they would “lose” 6 players to the WP Amateur team.
PRIZE GIVING FUNCTION….The annual prize giving function of the WP Union will take place on 19 October. The function will again be held at Kelvin Grove.
DATE OF AGM…..The annual general meeting of the WP Rugby Union will take place on Monday 29 November.
A new executive will be selected at this very important meeting
CONGRATULATION BEN!!!!!The WP Referees Society recently hosted a scholar referee camp.
140 Scholars attended this camp.
The scholars spent three days and two nights learning about what it takes to become a referee.
Congratulations to Ben Theron, Manager of the WP Referees Society, and this team. Ben was the driving force behind this very successful training camp.
This was a first for SA rugby and we hope that all unions will put similar training camps in place.
MAKE SURE ABOUT BOKSMART DATES….In the past few weeks many club officials attended BokSmart courses, presented by officials of the WP Union.
Clubs must make sure about the correct date and starting times of those courses.
Phone myself or Ben Theron at the offices of the WP Union to make sure about the date and time.
ALL 3 WP TEAMS IN ACTION…On Friday all 3 WP teams (Currie Cup, u. 21 and u.19) will be in action at Newlands.
Please come early and support the Province teams
WP AMATEUR TEAM TACKLE BORDER…The WP Amateur Team will be in action on Saturday when they will play against Border Country XV. The match will be played at Stellenbosch and will start at 13:00.
Rugby greetings
