True Heroes of Yesteryear
Why do so many of the so called "coloured "people in Cape Town (specially the older folk) still support and will always support the All Blacks: Its a painful story, but it is simple. Our best and most brilliant  players( I saw a lot of them) played in an era where they were not allowed to showcase their talents simply  because of the colour of their skin, hence supporting the Springboks was and always will be tabboo .Today in an era gone by our youngsters look  up to Chester , Breyton,Chilliboy and the lot and say, these are their heroes. But let me tell you about our own Heroes of Yesteryear and I maintain that if it were not for these TRUE HEROES of yesteryear we would still be without international rugby today..Why are the photos of these rugby pioneers who sweat blood and tears and paved the the way forward  never or seldom mentioned in the rugby annuals and walls of Newlands and the likes.John Allen and co have some disturbing programme  on TV called SA Legends. What  Legends is he referring to?These are all people who mostly benefitted after isolation.Common John do some investigating and tell us who are the REAL South African Heroes. This is what saddens our elders ,is that very little or insignificant recogniton is given to our own "Black"heroes of yesteryear.I have asked Ashfak Mohammed(Rugby writer for the Cape Times) to do a feature on at least one personality  per month. This after him or a colleague of his was referred to as a"Hotnot" at Loftus Versfeld.Let people know our origins, our sacrifices, our heritage in this wonderful game. 2 years later   I am still waiting on him ...

RE:True Heroes of Yesteryear
Hi Al

I am a young white guy so i really have no idea of who were the greats in the past.  As a result i do feel a bit robbed of who were ALL legends of the game in SA.  A monthly insert would be great to educate the younger generation.

On your note on the SA Legends thing that John Allen runs, i dont know much but i think an emphasis is based on recently retired players that can still play a bit.  So obviously they cant go too far back.  Just my opinion.

RE:True Heroes of Yesteryear
the topic is a bit bland now .. but stirs up the juices one has to say ... there were so many .. I know that a certain community radio station has done some work in this field .. but the thing that lacks are stats .. like player ages ... rep matches .. tries scored .. debut dates etc ...
It would be a great excercise .. but this topic is like the dirt we like to sweep under the carpet and keep it there and hope it goes away ...
