I think we have raised this topic in previous years, but I would just like to know what everybody’s point of view on this is…
This past Saturday we again had some disturbing incidents during and after our matches. During the matches, mostly 1st team, punches were thrown, eyes were scratched, players got rucked with the head etc. After the matches some of our players looked like they leopard crawled through a thorn bush head first with all the scratch marks in their faces. Surely this couldn’t be justified as “part of the game” as all these injuries were in and around the eyes area. So the word malicious had to come to mind. Also, to be bruised from a hard rugby match is part of the game, but from blatant punches, scratches and head butts?. After the matches, threads were handed out, people were verbally abused and a first team player even got “klapped” by a “club member”. (which must be a club member as he was sitting in the square during the first team match).
Obviously there are two sides to the story and the referees report will determine the guilty party(s), but my question is – IS THIS THE NORM WE HAVE COME TO ACCEPT IN WP CLUBRUGBY?
I thought about this long and hard, and I’m first to tell my players to stop crying about scratch and bite marks and play the game harder. But surely this shouldn’t be part of club rugby? At the end of the day, the best team on the day should win, not the biggest thugs?
I also feel that referees play a major part in controlling the game. If they are not strict from the word go, a club rugby game can become a “free-for-all” where anything goes.
I am not pointing fingers, but would just like to hear your thoughts on this…???
