Rugby vs "THUGby"

I think we have raised this topic in previous years, but I would just like to know what everybody’s point of view on this is…

This past Saturday we again had some disturbing incidents during and after our matches. During the matches, mostly 1st team, punches were thrown, eyes were scratched, players got rucked with the head etc. After the matches some of our players looked like they leopard crawled through a thorn bush head first with all the scratch marks in their faces. Surely this couldn’t be justified as  “part of the game” as all these injuries were in and around the eyes area. So the word malicious had to come to mind. Also, to be bruised from a hard rugby match is part of the game, but from blatant punches, scratches and head butts?. After the matches, threads were handed out, people were verbally abused and a first team player even got “klapped” by a “club member”. (which must be a club member as he was sitting in the square during the first team match).

Obviously there are two sides to the story and the referees report will determine the guilty party(s), but my question is – IS THIS THE NORM WE HAVE COME TO ACCEPT IN WP CLUBRUGBY?

I thought about this long and hard, and I’m first to tell my players to stop crying about scratch and bite marks and play the game harder. But surely this shouldn’t be part of club rugby? At the end of the day, the best team on the day should win, not the biggest thugs?

I also feel that referees play a major part in controlling the game. If they are not strict from the word go, a club rugby game can become a “free-for-all” where anything goes.

I am not pointing fingers,  but would just like to hear your thoughts on this…???

I won't go down in history...BUT I WILL GO DOWN ON YOUR SISTER!!!!

RE:Rugby vs "THUGby"
Ai Chuck, please dont play the victims here. Vra ma vir julle manne wat hulle ook gedoen het. I'd be the first to say we were beaten fairly and squarely on the day by a fitter and more structured team and kudos to the manne and coaching staff for that.

You say you're not pointing fingers, but with the topic , you definitely are. We can also ask the question by many of your spectators decided to invade the pitch after, but we accepted the loss.

One thing I can say is this, we've always had a good relationship with your team, why now after one game would things sour. Im not going to comment on some of things that were thrown our way as we walked into the changing room after, and we shook the hand of many of your club's representatives. The ref was given a fair bit of abuse as well by many of your supporters, it was also interesting to see 1 linesman having alot of say as to what was happening on the field and openly socialising with your clubs people afterwards. But Im not pointing fingers ... It takes 2 ... just remember that. I guess you also didnt see how punches were thrown the way of our one lock and no.8 ... or is it selective memory ... Nee wat, ons hou maar kommentaar tot die tweede rondte, looking forward to it.

Chuck, you see .. this is the reactions that a post like this will invoke. I have posted my reply though, so you can choose what you want to believe. A word of advice to you Slegend, keep your trap shut and piss off. You clearly have no idea what happened and speaking out of turn again. If I want you to speak, I'll pull the chain. Now to hell man.

RE:Rugby vs "THUGby"
Judging by Josh K's reply you played against Collegians.  Well since this is how they played, and worse, when they were in the SLA, it is sad, but it can be expected to be the norm from them.
Don't expect a mature debate from JK either - he isnt capable of it.

Just A Fan you are what they call off-side JK is long time done with Collegians, and when last have you been to Collegians to make this statement. You need to apologise to this club for your skewed comment and change your perception about the Coll.

RE:Rugby vs "THUGby"
According to my understanding, Chuck is a Senior Executive member of Goodwood RFC. In fact he is credited with turning around the fortunes of the club and charting it into a new direction.
We also know that Goodwood played against Rangers last weekend.

It is thus very dissapointing that as a senior executive member you blatantly attack a fellow club on a public forum.
But maybe there is a reason for the post

I hope I am wrong and that there is nothing malicious to this post.

It is bitter people like yourself who still live in the past that breaks down what we try to achieve in this country.
Collegians RFC has become a model club for others to aspire to. As an observer I can only congratulate the leadership at the club for the excellent work they are doing.
Keep up the good work and do not be sidetracked by comments from bitter people like JAF

RE:Rugby vs "THUGby"
Cape Flats, if what you say about Collegians is true, well done to them for turning it around.

The fact is a lot of youngsters (and their parents) do not want to play club rugby due to some of the violence issues. One only has to look at Boland as to how serious it is. Why should I play a sport I love and be subjected to foul play. We need to eradicate it.

One of the first steps is that clubs who have a problem need to acknowledge it. Far too often they get defensive about it. From top down it is easier to solve. A coach can tell his players that he will not play them if they resort to dirty play. A club can ban unruly spectators etc. It is a culture that can be implimented fairly easily.

RE:Rugby vs "THUGby"
Hate foul play, irritates the hell out of me!!!

Side note... Collegians has been the cleanest (and toughest) of the 4 games played so far by NNK in SLB

Chuck, to get to your post, there are clubs that are known for pushing the laws a bit, but dont let that influence you beforehand.  Collegians game this year is a great example of that.  Expected a rough game got only a major tough game.

Dont know if this is the case, but i have also played in teams and weve been told to niggle with players to get them to start playing off the ball coz then they stop playing rugby.
