Bloemfontein - A 23-year-old rugby player is in a serious condition in hospital on Monday after being shot in the neck during a hijacking in Bloemfontein, Free State police said.
Captain Chaka Marope said Marnus Briedenhann, 23, who plays for the Griffons rugby team, was hijacked by two armed men in Westdene, Bloemfontein in the early hours of Sunday morning.
"They forced him to drive to Naval Hill... he tried to escape and that's when they shot him in the neck," said Marope.
A passer-by called an ambulance for Briedenhann, who played against the Falcons in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, at the weekend.
Meanwhile, the police's patrolling unit spotted his car at a filling station in Botshabelo and a shoot-out ensued.
The hijackers ran away but the car was recovered.
Beeld newspaper said Briedenhann was a cousin of Afrikaans comedian Al Debbo who died aged 87 last week.
