WP Currie Cup
I have noticed that nothing has been said about the WP currie cup season on this forum yet.
I personally am not happy with the team which played against Griquas
How can the selection of Sadie & Engelbrecht be justified?
Why is Conrad Jantjies still in the team?
Is UCT the only club WP select from?
These are just some of the questions I had about that.
Although I am pleased they did not win, I am somewhat dissapointed they managed to draw.

RE:WP Currie Cup
The first round of CC matches as a whole was weird. So many new names...where do they all come from? In the WP backline I only knew Jantjes and Sadie. The others I wouldn't be able to pick in a line-up.

LOL.....yes CF, i was also suprised to see them in the team but according to Coetzee they will still give 100% for WP before they leave. Personally i would have given other fringe players or those who played in the warmup match against Boland a chance
Also, where is Y Hartzenberg?, he was the standout player in the warmup match and in SLA so far?. Kitshoff is not playing great rugby and Griquas had a big heavy pack, why play him?
The UCT influence??, Dobson, Fleck, Proudfoot?

RE:WP Currie Cup
would be interesting to see what happens now as Van Aswegen is out for about 2 months .. who do they play at 10 ???
The team did not do as badly , but the make-up is questionable, a standout was Kolisi .. is this guy really as young as he is ?? cos he is massively strong for a young fella ...
Why was Nizaam Carr not given a go ... the 'warm-ups' where so many club players took the field I knew would only be a PR excercise of sorts ... many of them wont smell a CC team this year, WP wat gan an ??

RE:WP Currie Cup
I would give both Nazeem Carr and Eben Etzebeth a go - they were (i.m.o) the stand-out players for the "jong bokke"
Carr has an imense work-rate and is a good link

This is same old, same old by Provance. When every they need players they only look at Maties and UCT. Else they buy some old boy from another union! There are so many players that have every right to be upset.
Hopefully Dollie will get a chance this weekend. Way overdue in my opinion.

RE:WP Currie Cup
Ya, all players have there haters and all fans have there favourates.
I'm not say Dollie is the best player in SA or anything like that. But he has never been tested after playing SA under-21.
I did a google search on Gary van Aswegen and could find any record for this kid. Yet Provance was willing to give him a chance?
Saying that, I think his a great talent. (watched him play for the first time on Saturday) But still needs to mature a bit. Made some critical errors with Provance on attach over the weekend.

van Aswegen started in 2 or 3 super rugby games earlier the year, before getting injured. He and Johan Sadie were the two stand-out players from last years champion u/20 side.
I've watched both of them during the u/20 season and they are very talented.

RE:WP Currie Cup
Thanks for that Porky. His definately a talent. And I'm glad he was given the chance to prove his stuff. My point was that the are others that work just as hard and prove themselves through the ranks but then provance agnores them.
I also feel bad for Gary. I think they should have given his knee more time to recover. Now his got to go through 8 weeks of rehab. And you know a knee is never the same.

Agreed.
At least Kolisi is a shinning light. Real talent. Lets hope more of these guys come through.

I would imagine Sadie and Engelbrecht are still under contract and need to earn their keep. I think you are a little unfair on the UCT comment. Koster/Kolisi (not yet played for UCT) and Lobberts were all in the province/stormers setup prior to joining UCT. Whitehead has earned his place over the past 3 years. In reality there are only 3 players in that team who were recently called up to the team, Catrakilis, Brache and Groome, and they all started from the bench. i see people above are calling for Etsebeth and Carr to be called up to the team-what are your thoughts, I dont see any alternative names being mentioned - are there some players you can think of - I feel Hartzenberg should get a shout before Carr. There are some good locks at the Bay and Hammies that would do ok in the WP setup. I would prefer Etsebeth play WP under 21 first. I think one of the reasons they select the varsity players is the experience they have playing in fromt of large crowds in pressure situations.
I first saw Dollie play as a 14 year old. Very talented but not sure he has what it takes at the top levels. Hope he proves me wrong. I thought Van Aswegen cost WP the game, kicking good ball away in attacking situations. Maybe he is trying to hard to make things happen.

RE:WP Currie Cup
I definately agree with you Toffee. Sadie and Engelbrecht should earn there keep. Also nobody can argue about Koster, Kolisi or Lobberts.
However, the feeling is that WP only seem to run to these clubs for players and maybe that in thanks to Varsity Cup, who knows?
All we know is that players at other clubs are clearly being agnored, no matter how good they are.
Surely WP should slowly start fillering these player in to the fold? Instead of later saying these players dont have experience at this level. Then they were willing to play Van Aswegen in Super Rugby after only playing WP U-20.
I totally agree with regarding him cost WP the game, as per my previous post regarding him making to many errors on attack. He also though a lob pass inside the 5m line to a player in a worst position that himself rather than going for the line.

RE:WP Currie Cup
So another UCT player Fenton Wells called up to WP team. All the Ikeys might as well prepare themselves for Currie Cup rugby
