Vineyards look to do the impossible! (Paarl Post Article)
Vineyards rugby club is on a mission to build on this year’s success and defend their league title with 11 injuries to first team players. Vineyards already holds the Paarl region Tens and Sevens trophies for 2011 and another league title will place the cherry on top of another successful year.
Vineyards will start it’s run to retain the league title for a second year in a row this Saturday when they take on Riverstones on Daljosaphat stadium. The men in maroon will be a bit rusty seeing that they just set foot on the rugby field tonight, for the first time in a month due to the Ramadaan break. Vineyards is currently second on the log and needs to win their last 5 games and hope that Lower Paarl and Violets lose a game or 2. Add to this, the current injury woes and it looks an impossible task. With star forwards, Ibie Davids (Flank); Zahier Chippendale (Flank); Thaamir Moerat (Eigthman) and Farel Cedras (Prop) not available for the rest of the season and Zubair Du Plessis (Fly-half); captain Adlee Moerat (Centre); Anwar Shuhail Moerat (Wing); Niyaaz Abrahams (Centre) and Timmy Rhode (Wing) doubtful, the woes just continue.
Vineyards will also have to make do with the loss of Fly-half Dayne Peterson and scrum half Alvin Farmer to the Disa squad. They will most likely miss the next 2 games.
With all odds stacked against them, Vineyards could pull of a miracle should they successfully retain their status as league champs for a second year running.

RE:Vineyards look to do the impossible! (Paarl Post Article)
Samwell Part 4, I need to say this: If you guys manage to do this, the only thing that you will achieve, besides winning a trophy, is not to prove how strong Vineyards are, but actually how weak the Paarl Region competition is, you guys beat everyone by 50 with your best team and now your ''2nd'' team can still win matches......

Well, we lost to Goodwood pre-season by 6 points (54-48) and they seem to be doing well... We beat Paarl club, Peoples and Franschoek in the tens and sevens but yes I agree with you, I am sot saying we are good. Again, this site is to promote your club so that si what I am doing.
To answer your question though, the league is crap. There are only 3 teams thsi year, I would say Lower Paarl, us, Violets Paarl that are strong. The rest were medicore... But this is where we play and thsi is where WP wants us to play so what can we do but enjoy. After all we are ametuers :-)

Kappa, also to add yes, I think it is time for us to move and get beter competition but again, where to? Boland maybe? Because WP will not place us in Super B or Premier A. Again, we have players in that made the Boland u19 and u21. We should be playing there but that is my opinion and not that of teh club.

I agree that you guys are strong, and I read what you wrote before how your players are moving to bigger unions and Varsity Cup, that is GREAT, but how is the Paarl Region going to improve the quality of the league? I see Vinyards being the driving force in trying to achieve this.

Ideal solution would be for clubs in Paarl to merge but that will NEVER happen. We even tried the board team but that fell away as clubs did not want to release thier bext players. you must remeber, Paarl is a rugby crazy town. We get more spectators on the Dal than most Super league teams and our following at Vineyards is huge. We even have our own clothing range that sells! But for Vineyards, there are the visionaries like myself who want bigger and better and then there are the comfort zone guys who do not wnat to travel and keep playing in Paarl and for the community this and that etc.
And also yes, our "second" team will have to do it for us over the next 5 weeks lol
PS. We are organizing a tournament pre-season with Collegians, Primrose, Vineyards, Rangers and Silvertree and one other, still deciding. Al-Isra rugby day but that is in the pipeline for next year. Maybe we will have some more respect when we win that :-)
