WP DISAS
WP DISA TEAM
The Western Province Disa Team has been finalised and is hard at practise to defend their SARU Sub Union title in Saldanha Bay from 17 to 24 September. The WP Amateur team will also be in action at the same venue.
The following players were selected: Leon Djuko Samuel (Sir Lowrians), Mzwethu Kave (Langa), Edward Makhundayi (Sir Lowrians), Ruan Vermaak (Kraaifontein), Carlton Isaac (Cloetesville), Arthur Botha (Kraaifontein), Griffith Temba (UWC), Tertius Koekemoer (Kraaifontein), Amien Bailey (St Georges), Charlton Cloete (St Georges), Jaco van Wyk (Goodwood), Lourens Pearson (Milnerton), Hendrico Maurice (Sir Lowrians), Steve Julies (Scottsdene), Dennis Walter-Blader (Kraaifontein), Donnie Fredericks (Lower Paarl), Wynand Collins (Kraaifontein), Hein Pretorius (Riverstone), Masibulele Ntame (Langa), Alvin Farmer (Vineyards), Christiaan Burger (Goodwood), Daine Petersen (Vineyards), Andy de Bruin (Maccasar), Mzukisi Matshanya (Blue Jet), Rickus Swanepoel (Goodwood).
Winston Baard is the head coach and Warren Wilters the assistant coach. The manager is Johan Arendse.

Quite many Sir Lowrians in this squad. Woulda expected more Gwd, Lulu and Langa players seeing that they are setting the PLA alight. even more so, UWC who is above SL in the PLB or even Vineyards who seem to have some good runs but hey.......

RE:WP DISAS
Howzit! Expected 3 more players from Vineyards but they are all 4 injured. Ibie Davids (flank) previously from Kloof was a surety from the start but he had knee surgery again as well as Zahier Chippendale (Flank) ankle injury out for rest of season and wing Anwar Shuhail Moerat (Bom Samaai's cousin who was invited to train with Boland after ramadaan) also wing is out with a broken wrist for rst of season. Vineyards has 11 injured first team players since teh begining of teh second round so ultimately our "second team" can win teh league for us again thsi year :-) Hopefully...

I think that Daine Peterson has the ability to play provincial. He came to us from UWC after finishing his studies. He played with Juan De Jong at his outside his whoel school career. I rate him big time! We will probably lose him after this tournamment to a "bigger" club or union.

Alvin Farmer played SA with Lambie and Elton Jantjies. He is by far our smallest and best player lol!

Fourth player was our Captain Adlee Moerat (centre) who is 30 now and declined from the start. Played Disas 4 or 5 years in the  past.

RE:WP DISAS
Eish, that's a "Catch-22" question. The only way we will know if they are good enough is if they join a SLA club and compete for a 1st team spot. Until then, the jury will always be out. To use a professional example, there may be some excellent players at the Bulldogs or Griffons, but until they join a bigger union they have zero chance of becoming Boks, no matter how much potential they have.

RE:WP DISAS

@bill, the aim of my post is to get the sla scouts to go out and have a look at these guys and if they are good enough, to "contract" them.

some of these players would love to play in the sla, but it's not always possible because of financial constraits travelling to and from a sla club etc.

with the support of an sla club they might even go further...

RE:WP DISAS
Yebo Met Eish, I hear you. Getting to practice sounds like an easy thing but for some people it can be very difficult indeed.

But if all else fails, sometimes a player himself has to make whatever sacrifices he has to in order to achieve his rugby goals, and not necessarily wait for scouts who may never come. It takes hard work to get to the top, and not only on the field of play. Sometimes just getting to the field of play is hard enough as  you say.

Players in this day and age do have the right to join any club they want and with the WP area being so small relative to the other provinces, I don't think there is a massive logistical issue with getting to one of the 9 SLA clubs. It's not as if we are playing in the Northern Cape, where players have to travel 700km every weekend to get to a game.

It's a difficult situation and one hopes that scouts from bigger clubs do go looking for talent in lower divisions, but the player himself also needs to look hard at himself and ask, am I willing to do whatever it takes to play at a higher level? Sport is unforgiving, even at a relatively low level like WP club rugby, talent only gets you so far and those scouts may never come to a club near you. The sad reality.
