Five-try Maties too good for Hammies
FALSE BAY.(12) 22 UCT (16) 36
UCT scored 20 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes to wrap up a convincing win over False Bay in a Super League A encounter in Constantia yesterday.
It was another courageous performance from the students who, after their third win on the trot and fifth from eight games, will now be viewed as serious title contenders.
While yesterday’s performance was at times patchy by nature of uncharacteristic first-half handling errors, the fact that they were able to finish the contest off strongly says a lot about the depth in numbers and character within the ranks of the reigning Varsity Cup champions.
This victory, to go with last week’s gutsy win over the Maties, has given rise to a belief that UCT can do the season double.
The Bay will be kicking themselves for their failure to stay competitive in the closing 12 minutes.
Up until then they were in with a shout of pulling off an upset win, as they were in the lead 22-16. It wasn’t the wind that conspired against them (it blew into them in the first half and disappeared in the second) but more a case of giving away silly penalties and turnover ball due to lack of numbers at the collision points.
UCT flooded the field with their substitutes and needed no second invitation to take control of the match.
First a penalty goal from the boot of reliable kicker Paul Cohen to get within three points, before the onslaught, that saw Nicholas Holton in for his second five-pointer, followed in quick succession by touchdowns from winger Cohen and fullback Ricky Rijs.
Whereas UCT were lacking in getting numbers to the breakdowns earlier on in the first period, coupled with handling errors by the back division, the employment of a calmer demeanour in the final quarter proved decisive in the visitors being able to turn things around.
UCT captain Nicholas FentonWells continues to be an inspirational leader, and while the hardworking No 7 suffered a rare yellow card for some robust play in the third quarter, his ability to lift his troops cannot be under-estimated and is one of the chief reasons why UCT are enjoying the success they’ve had so far this season.
For the Bay, big performances were registered in the first half by No 8 Whalied Heyns, his attacking of the flyhalf channel with plenty of aggression led to the break and the breakaway opening try that saw right wing Jaco Roux dotting down.
Fellow loose forward Thabani Sangweni also featured prominently with some big hits in open play, while amongst the backs fullback Damien van Rensburg looked threatening on the counter attack.
FALSE BAY. Tries: Jaco Roux (2), JP Koster. Conversions: Meryck Ward (2). Drop goal: Peter Benade UCT. Tries: Nicholas Holton (2), Paul Cohen, Ricky Rijs. Conversions: Cohen (2). Penalties: Cohen (4)
HAMILTONS (18) 28 MATIES . (7) 29
IN AN exciting game at Green Point, the Stellenbosch students recorded a narrow victory over a luckless home team.
Hamiltons used the wind to good effect in the first half, pinning the visitors in their own half with some well directed kicks.
In this regard man of the match Janno van Zyl (fullback) deserves a special mention. Apart from his quality play in general, Van Zyl also contributed all of the 28 points of his side, which included a well taken try.
Hamiltons No 8 Willem van de Wal was also impressive, his workrate was out of the top drawer.
In the second half the Maties backline seemed to find their feet as they ran in a number of long range tries. Speedy Provincial star JJ Engelbrecht (wing) was always a threat on attack as he scored two tries. Johan Herbst (scrumhalf) gave a lively performance while in midfield, Michael van der Spuy (centre) proved to be the main playmaker for the visitors.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the students deserved their victory as they scored five tries to one. HAMILTONS. Try: Janno van Zyl. Conversion: Van Zyl. Penalties: Van Zyl (7). MATIES. Tries: JJ Engelbrecht (2), André Kemp, Johan Herbst, Wimpie van der Walt. Conversions: Jarred Buys, Donald Stevens
SK Walmers(24) 45 Durbanville-Bellville (24) 39
THIS match at the Green Point Track was decided in the final minute when Yagya Hudsenberg (replacement lock) went over for a try.
The lead changed hands on numerous occasions with play fairly even upfront and Pierre Munroe (hooker) of the BoKaap team catching the eye in general play.
For the visitors, PJ Kleinhans (flank) was always a thorn in broken play, as he secured a number of turnovers.
SK Walmers backs showed more flare on attack. In this regard pacey winger Edries Arendse was particularly effective as he rounded his opponent on a few occasions.
The match was a good advert for club rugby in Western Province as both sides showed a willingness to run the ball at all times. This led to an entertaining spectacle as a number of tries were scored. SK WALMERS. Tries: Pierre Munroe, Madeeg Davids, penalty try, Abubaker Davids, Yagya Hudsenberg, Ederies Arendse. Conversions: Adnaan Osman (6). Penalty: Arendse. DURBANVILLE. BELHAR (12) 23 HELDERBERG (3) 22
AT BELHAR, the hosts had to struggle all the way to win the battle of the bottom dwellers.
The visitors, who struggled in the first half came back strongly towards the end but failed to break down the home side’s defence.
It was a hard fought battle upfront. The visitors had the edge in the loose play with flanker Gary Williams securing good quality ball.
In the tight it was the home side who won plenty of turnover ball through their frontranker Andile Mrwebi.
Belhar were the first to cross the line with scrumhalf Richard Thansie who broke clear after a full line of movement. Shortly afterwards they increased their lead when winger Gardener Nicheronga intercepted from 40 metres out to score a splendid try.
In the second half, play swung from end to end with the visitors gaining more possession through their forwards. Lock Vicus van Staden jumped brilliantly in the lineouts winning plenty of clean ball.
Midway through the half the home side sealed the win with a further two tries. Helderberg fought back brilliantly in the closing stages, notching three tries of their own but it was too little too late. BELHAR. Tries: Gardener Nicheronga (2), Richard Thansie. Conversions: Eric Zana. Penalties: Zana (2) HELDERBERG. Tries: Mynhard le Roux (2), Morne’ Hugo. Conversions: Morne Bruwer (2). Penalty: Hugo
